"I am interested in the Indian Ocean as a site of intersection of fragmented experiences and a multiplicity of histories"

Nicole Steenhof is a visual artist currently working with painting and sculpture based in Boorloo, Perth. Propelled by an interest in ocean studies, Steenhof works towards an embodied painting process, alert to sensations beyond sight. Her sculpture work is made from found and post consumer items, concentrating on form and connection to histories of oceans.

In her latest collection, she is developing ideas on how we engage with the agential life of the sea with tenderness, to relearn connection. The works encourage an intimate notice and imagination for life within climate crises. She is inspired by deep ecology to realise that you cannot grieve over what you do not love.

"I am exploring the idea of being a body of water among and within bodies of water"

With regards to commissions, I would love to hear from you. Previously, I've created commissions for the passing away of a loved one, or a celebration of a life or a new season, and also as a connection to home for those living away. It is such an honour for me to be involved in the process of commemorating moments through art. Please send me an email with your enquiry and I can provide you with more information.
A big heartfelt thank you for showing an interest in my art, practice and visiting this site.
